Tri Parish Human Concerns Committee
The purpose of the Human Concerns Committee is to discern the needs of people in the parish and wider community – especially the poor – and identify resources to meet those needs while enlisting the active support and participation of parish members. This committee helps to fulfill the justice dimensions of scripture and our Catholic social teaching tradition while acknowledging that every Christian is called to service and to work for justice.
The mission of human concerns requires the Tri-parish Committee to organize into sub-committees or ministry teams in order to address specific activities and projects. The Tri-parish Committee’s role is to monitor, evaluate, and collaborate with these groups so that they minister more effectively. These sub-committees or ministry teams should report their activity regularly to the Tri-parish Human Concerns Committee to discuss the current state of the sub-committee activity and to exchange new ideas for more effective ministry.
There are ex officio members of the Committee who serve by virtue of their office. Additional members are selected or volunteer to serve on the Committee.
Ex Officio Members
- Staff Member with responsibilities for human concerns ministries
- Pastoral Council Liaison
- Parishioners involved in a human concerns activity or project
- Parishioners with an interest or expertise in human concerns ministry
The Human Concerns Committee is responsible for these key functions:
- 1. Assess the level of basic human needs within the tri-parish and the wider community by studying the demographics of the tri-parish area and surveying the needs.
- Identify resources to meet needs by learning about existing Church agencies and community groups and providing referral information.
- Develop services and programs by involving others in the ministry to help people in need and to work for justice.
- Develop a tri-parish-wide consciousness of Catholic social teaching by educating and informing people about right to life and human dignity issues.
- Coordinate and support the activity of sub-committees and ministry teams which are directly involved in particular projects and ministries.
- Promote and organize twinning and sharing relationships with international or national parishes as well as parishes within the diocese.
- Review and evaluate the Human Concerns Committee budgets in conjunction with the parish finance councils.
Tri-parish Pastoral Council tasks the Tri-parish Human Concerns Committee to begin regular joint meetings every other month on a regular rotation at all three parishes. These meetings are to be attended by Human Concerns Liaison to the Tri-parish Pastoral Council and held to hear reports from active sub-committees and to plan and facilitate joint activities. In this first year, the meetings will be lead by a Human Concerns Chair and held on the first or second Tuesday of a scheduled month to begin at 6:30 p.m. according to these dates: May 1, 2018 at St. Charles, July 10 at St. Joseph, September 4 at St. Mary, and November 6 at St. Charles.
A Human Concerns Committee will have a number of sub-committees or ministry teams which work directly with particular projects or ministries. All human concerns sub-committee projects and ministries should be coordinated by the Tri-parish Human Concerns Committee. The Tri-parish Human Concerns Committee should consult with the Tri-parish Pastoral Council prior to the organization of any new sub-committee or ministry team.

Duties of Human Concerns Chair
a. Lead regular joint meetings every other month on a regular rotation at all three parishes.
b. Contact parish staff to schedule meetings and reserve location of meetings.
c. Contact sub-committee members by email or telephone one week prior to scheduled meeting date with reminder of time and place. Include an agenda of the meeting.
d. Notify the tri-parish bulletin editors to publish scheduled meeting dates and locations.
e. Open each meeting with prayer. Facilitate the meeting through the agenda and discussion. Close the meeting with prayer.
f. Work with sub-committee leadership within the tri-parish to develop a current contact list and build the working relationship.
g. Work with tri-parish staff to disseminate information to educate tri-parish community of combined Human Concerns efforts and encourage participation and involvement in the ministry.
Duties of Human Concerns Sub-committee Leaders
a. Attend Tri-parish Human Concerns bi-monthly meetings to report sub-committee projects and ministry activity and needs. If unable to attend the meeting, a report may be made over the phone or sent by email to Human Concerns Chair no later than the Monday evening prior to the scheduled meeting.
b. Provide leadership to sub-committee members and the tri-parish community to encourage active participation in sub-committee projects and ministry team efforts.
c. Work with sub-committee leadership within the tri-parish to develop a current contact list and build the working relationship.
d. Work with tri-parish staff to disseminate information to educate tri-parish community of combined Human Concerns efforts and encourage participation and involvement in the sub-committee projects.
Duties of Recording Secretary Human Concerns
a. Attend Tri-parish Human Concerns bi-monthly meetings and record minutes of each meeting to include attendance, reports made by sub-committee leaders, and a brief summary of discussions held on new and old business.
b. Submit a copy of the minutes to the Human Concerns Chair within a week of the meeting. Upon approval of the Tri-parish Human Concerns Committee, the minutes will be provided to tri-parish staff for publication of minutes on parish websites.
c. Work with sub-committee leadership within the tri-parish to develop a current contact list
and build the working relationship.
d. Work with tri-parish staff to disseminate information to educate tri-parish community of combined Human Concerns efforts and encourage participation and involvement in the ministry.
